Tell us about your practice.

Empower Your Mind Therapy is a group that focuses on helping young adults manage the stress of emerging adulthood. We focus on self-esteem, relationships, stress management, and managing emotions. Our mission is to help our clients think differently, do more, and worry less so that they can build the life they want and find more happiness and satisfaction. We provide individual and DBT group services. I am certified in DBT and all the therapists who work for my practice are intensively trained in DBT and supervised by me. The office is located in Flatiron on the corner of 25th and Broadway, right across from Madison Square Park.

What made you decide to open your own business?

I am really passionate about being a therapist and want to provide the best service possible to my clients. Opening my own practice allows me to do so. I get to set the structure and do things in the way that most aligns with my vision and philosophy. It’s not easy to be a therapist and run a business but I am extremely happy with my decision!

What has been the most challenging aspect of building your business?

Learning how to be a business woman. In graduate school, they teach you how to be a therapist, but I had no business training or knowledge. Figuring out how to run a business and get referrals that are the right fit for my practice was and sometimes is very challenging.

Deciding to expand into a group practice was another challenging piece for me. I knew it was the right decision so that I can cater to more people in my area, however, I felt like I was learning a whole new business skill set. I feel very fortunate that the people I have brought on board are amazing and align perfectly with my mission and vision. This has helped me better manage all the challenges that comes with being a boss and having a team of people that work for me.

What has been the most rewarding part of building your business?

Getting to play by my rules and helping more people. I truly believe to be an effective therapist, you have to believe in what you are doing and practice a lot of self-care. Building my business allows me to market to my niche; to the clients that are the best fit for me, which is super important in order to provide the best care possible. Being the boss also gives me the flexibility I need to practice self-care. I love what I do and feel really energized by it. I am not sure I would feel this way if I was working for an agency.

How has Private Practice Studio helped you in achieving your business goals?

Private Practice Studio taught me the building blocks of opening my own private practice. It gave me the foundation I needed to be able to take that leap and start my own business.

Anything else you would like us to know?

If you know that starting your own practice is right for you, don’t let fear get in the way. It is not easy, but very worthwhile if it is the right fit for you. Staying on top of self-care is key to manage the stress and doubt that generally comes when you take the leap. Allow yourself to take it slow build at a pace that works for you, that will help take the pressure off.
